reform-wallpaper.py doesn't recognize newly connected monitor

when connecting a HDMI display for the first time after reform-wallpaper.py is already running, it doesn't show the wallpaper on the new display. at least not on RK3588. restarting reform-wallpaper.py makes it appear.
